We go from the most solemn liturgy of the year on Good Friday to the most magnificent liturgy of the year at our Easter Vigil. We gather outside the church the light the New Fire, and from that to light our Paschal Candle. We enter the church in darkness to sounds of an ancient chant. Then, by candlelight, we hear the great stories of the people of God, retold. Finally, a great noise signifies the rolling away of the stone from Christ’s tomb, the lights come on, and we celebrate the Resurrection with bells and singing. The service continues with baptisms of new Christians, and the First Communion of Easter. Truly a magnificent evening.
